Motorola ES400S – Truly Powerful, Robust and Global

Rugged and business-ready, the Motorola ES400S for Sprint is a Windows Mobile 6.5 device designed for mobile managers and task workers, offering plenty of enterprise-friendly features such as push-to-talk functionality, a biometric fingerprint sensor, a bar code scanner and a number of enterprise applications.

At 5.08" high by 2.38" wide by 0.67" thick and 5.5 ounces, the ES400S is definitely a massive device, but its size is justified by the durable exterior that is built to resist drop, bumps, vibrations, water and other elements. The phone boasts a physical QWERTY keyboard, along with a 3-inch (262,000-color and 640x480-pixel) analog resistive touchscreen display with haptic response. A stylus is also included for easy and accurate input.

The ES400S is a dual-mode phone that can switch between 3.5G GSM and CDMA networks. Built as a mobile Enterprise Digital Assistant (EDA), it delivers business-class functionality for diverse industries, such as field sales, field service, retail and healthcare. Apart from push-to-talk for off-network communications, the phone is capable of accessing numerous enterprise applications, giving you the ability to scan barcodes, check inventory, place orders and more. You can customize the user interface by putting the functions you use most on the home screen. To ensure only authorized workers gain device and network access, the phone also has a built-in fingerprint reader and PIN code support.

Instead of the latest Windows Phone 7, the ES400S runs on Windows Mobile 6.5.3 Professional. Still, you will find all the useful features you need on the smartphone: IE Mobile, Office Mobile, the My Phone backup service, Windows Media Player, MSN Messenger, Windows Live, Bing and so on. With Microsoft's Direct push, you can sync Outlook e-mail, talks, calendar and contacts via your company's Exchange server. POP3 and IMAP accounts are supported as well.

Additionally, the ES400S offers other features like text messaging, multimedia messaging, voice command, speakerphone, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, a 3.2-megapixel autofocus camera/camcorder, a 3.5mm stereo audio jack and an accelerometer. Preinstalled apps include Sprint Navigation, Remote Desktop Mobile, MSP Agent and more. Of course, you can download more from the Windows Marketplace for Mobile. The phone is embedded with 1GB flash memory and supports an additional microSD memory card up to 32GB.

In short, the Motorola ES400S is all about business. Its tough design, intuitive UI and full business compatibility make it perfect for mobile workers to maximize on-the-job efficiency and boost productivity.

Samsung Galaxy S 4G (SGH-t959V) – The Absolute Winner in Speed

The Samsung Galaxy S 4G, a follow-up to the Samsung Vibrant and a 4G variant of the popular Galaxy S, is the first to support T-Mobile's super-fast 4G network. Taking advantage of its speed upgrade, the smartphone offers users a wonderful entertainment experience with its wide range of entertainment options, such as Mobile TV, Samsung Media Hub, videoconferencing and mobile hotspot functionality.

The Galaxy S 4G has the exact same size (4.82" high by 2.54" wide by 0.39" deep) and weight (4.16 ounces) as the Vibrant, and also retains the 4-inch (480 x 800) super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display. The smartphone runs on Android 2.2 Froyo OS, but its user interface is based on Samsung's own TouchWiz 3.0. You will find two virtual keyboard options, Samsung and Swype, for quick and easy typing.

The Galaxy S 4G's multimedia features remain pretty much the same as its predecessor. The rear-facing camera/camcorder lets you take 5.0-megapixel photos and record 720p HD videos. Working with Skype's QIK software, the front-facing camera gives you the ability to engage in video chats without buffering. A TouchWiz music player and a Flash-equipped WebKit browser are on board as well.

To enrich your entertainment options, the new Galaxy S is also pre-installed with an array of applications from Samsung and T-Mobile. T-Mobile TV allows you to watch free content from ABC News NOW, FOX Sports and some other stations. Samsung's Media Hub lets you download songs, movies and TV shows. And using doubleTwist with AirSync, you can wirelessly sync your iTunes or Windows Media Player between your phone and computer via Wi-Fi. In addition, you will find a full-length copy of the movie Inception, which you can enjoy right out of the box.

The Galaxy S 4G is also a powerful messaging device; it supports corporate email, Instant Messaging, multimedia messaging and threaded text messaging. Like other Galaxy S phones, it includes Social Hub, a social media aggregator that syncs your calendars as well as your contact messages, emails and social network activities into a single view.

In addition, you will find features like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi connectivity, voice-enabled GPS navigation, speakerphone, voice recognition, a proximity sensor, a light sensor, an accelerometer and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The device comes with 1GB of ROM and 512MB of RAM, and you can expand the storage capacity up to 32GB with an additional microSD card.

With blazing fast data connection and some other enhanced features, the Samung Galaxy S 4G is no doubt a welcome addition to T-Mobile's smartphone lineup, and an incredible device for streaming music and videos, loading web pages and downloading apps.

LG Aims for Great Gains in 2011 Smartphone Sales

After suffering from sluggish sales of low-end phones last year, LG hopes to make a comeback in 2011 by focusing on premium products. At the Mobile World Congress 2011, the company announced its ambitious goal of selling 150 million handsets around the world, with one-fifth of them expected to be smartphones.

LG, the world's no.3 handset manufacturer after Nokia and Samsung, sold around 7 million smartphones globally last year. This year it aims high by targeting a four-fold increase to more than 30 million units, which will account for 50 percent of its total handset revenues. Including other types of phones, the company plans to increase the shipments to 150 million units, up 30 percent over 2010.

Due to a late start in the smartphone arena and its aging handset lineup, LG has been struggling with a declining global market share (8.4 percent last year compared with 10.1 percent a year earlier), according to market researcher IDC.

To make a turnaround, LG intends to introduce 20 new smartphone models this year. Its focus will be put on high-end devices that embrace the latest technologies, such as dual-core processors, 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) and 3D display, so as to challenge Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy S. Meanwhile, the company will improve its content and services through partnerships with content providers. It will also invest heavily to boost its overall capacity and expand its research and development workforce by 15 percent to over 6,000 employees.

"We are already focusing all of our resources on delivering the widest variety of smart devices for all types of customers," said Park Jong-seok, President and CEO of LG Mobile Communications, in a statement. "This will be a critical year for LG and a lot of eyes are upon us to see if we'll succeed. We don't intend to let them down."

LG's strategies seem to be on the right track. It should be interesting to see whether they can actually bring a reversal of fortune to LG's handset division.
